Our Sheep

At the Hjelholt wool mill we have our own flock of sheep.

The flock consists of 300 breeding ewes.

Part of the flock is purebred Gotlandic sheep, but the main flock is a crossbred flock, based on the breeds Gotlandic, Border Leicester and Texel sheep.

A small flock of sheep is grassing around the wool mill in Hesselager, but the main flock will be grassing elsewhere in the local area.

In the summertime our sheep will be grassing meadows and enviromental grassing in the neighbourhood.

In the autummn and winter periods they will be grassing fields of grass seeds and crops at local farms and estates.

Late winter the sheep are kept indoors, where we are feeding the flock with grass silage, straw and grains.

The Ewes are lambing indoors in April.

Lambing period is quite intensive.

We operate with a lambing percentage at 1,70 and a high rate of survival (+ 95 %).

Straight after lambing , ewes and lambs are transported to their different pastures of summer grassing.

The sheep are shorn twice a year.

Summer shearing in September/October, and winter shearing in February before comming indoors.

When shearing the wool will be well sorted according to the different types, and all wool will be used in our own production at the mill.
